• The first three decades of my life were uneventful regarding my health. When I turned thirty my cousin died and a year later my uncle who was like a dad to me got diagnosed with terminal cancer. Soon after I experienced pain in the upper left quadrant when eating too much and ultrasound revealed pancreatic cysts. My pancreatic markers/BioDots, amylase, lipase, CA19-9, CEA, etc. were normal as were my other blood tests and I did not have any extreme symptoms with the cysts. The doctor felt it was abnormal for a young woman to have pancreatic cysts so he ordered an MRI with contrast to monitor. The MRI showed two cysts, one on the tail and a cluster on the body of the pancreas, with no concerning features. Thus, the doctor felt comfortable taking the watch and wait approach, which included an annual MRI with contrast. Thus, every year for eight years I had MRI with contrast, which I then decided to go for an ERCP guided biopsy of pancreatic cysts performed by a top Harvard doctor specializing in this procedure. The findings were negative for pre-cancer or cancer but the procedure caused extreme pain and I suffered with pain and weight loss for about six months. I then enrolled in herbal medicine school and decided no more MRIs and procedures and started on some natural solutions which included solutions to help balance my liver and lymphatic system. I repeated an ultrasound three years later post graduation which detected no more cysts. Now the question is did the ERCP lead to some leakage/inflammation which causes the cysts to regress or did the herbal interventions lead to the regression or both. Throughout this journey my biodots/labs remained normal for about five year with a slight change now as i have on the lower end WBC and a slight increase in albumin. I have a PMS2 and a Factor V mutation. I have a family history of cancer on both sides. The PMS2 mutation is linked to Lynch syndrome and colon cancer on my mother’s side. My 105 year old grandmother also was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts 40 years prior and she has not had any pancreatic issues. Still a mystery as to what caused this and why they regressed but most recently, 10 years post ultrasound finding no cysts, MRI picked up a 1.1 cm cyst in the tail and nothing in the body. Suggesting that ultrasound is not as sensitive and also confirming that the cyst in the pancreatic body indeed did regress, which then begs a question as to the why.
